Abruzzo Triumphs: It is the Wine Region of the Year!
Abruzzo has been nominated by the experts of Wine Enthusiast, an important US wine sector magazine, as the Wine Region of the Year for 2022. The second significant global recognition for Italian wine within a short period of time.
Just a few days ago Tuscany had made its voice heard in the world’s top 10 best wines according to Wine Spectator, an important and influential magazine in the sector. Three regional labels were represented in the standings with a Brunello di Montalcino on the podium, in second position.
Now we move a little further to the southeast to enter Abruzzo, a territory chosen by the Wine Enthusiast as the best in terms of winemaking at a global level. The US magazine was evidently bewitched by the mix of “tradition imbued with innovation”, as they say from the columns of the wine magazine. In short, in a matter of a few days, the wine of Italy scores double, earning precious awards from some of the most important sector magazines worldwide.
The geographical structure of Abruzzo has certainly helped to direct the decision of the American experts. Inland, the Gran Sasso massif, with the most important peak of the Apennine chain, is just about fifty kilometers from the Adriatic shores, with the overflows outlining the silhouette of the local coastline. In between, an unparalleled wealth of culture, farming and wine: with the great wines dictating the law. From the most famous red, Montepulciano, to whites such as Trebbiano and Pecorino, all the way to Montepulciano rosé and Cerasuolo. “The wines of Abruzzo tell us about themselves through the local grapes that express their characteristics and sense of place”says the Wine Enthusiast in electing Abruzzo as Region of the Year for 2022.
