Cerasuolo d'Abruzzo DOC

Cerasuolo d’Abruzzo is one of most prestigious and popular types of rosés, produced from the Montepulciano grape.

The area of the Cerasuolo d’Abruzzo DOC appellation coincides with the Abruzzo region and includes the entire coastal and foothill area, which in the central part extends inward.

For over two centuries a dispute over the authorship of the name “Montepulciano” raged on, between Abruzzo and Montepulciano city winemakers. The dispute ultimately ended with the identification of two distinct grape varieties.

The first production and marketing of “Montepulciano wine” was in 1821 in Pescara (presumably in Tocco da Casauria, where the Guelfi family resided). We have confirmation of this activity thanks to a piece of rare documented proof handwritten by the architect, Tommaso Camplone, from Pescara.

The vineyard area therefore includes municipalities of all four provinces of Abruzzo: Chieti, L’Aquila, Pescara and Teramo. The area of designation is limited to soil that is below 600 meters, so that most of the vineyards are located in the lower eastern part of the region.

DOC Cerasuolo d’Abruzzo is a recent classification, created in October 2010.  This includes types of rosé wine that previously fell within the Cerasuolo type of the DOC Montepulciano d’Abruzzo. This particular vinification technique allows to obtain light and lively wines, using a very short contact time between the must and the skins of the red grapes. The result is a wine with a delicate pigmentation, similar to the color of cherries (hence the name Cerasuolo).

Color is a distinctive element of these wines, but also delicacy and contemporary intensity and the complexity of the aromas have their own importance. It is one of the longest-lived rosé wines in the world thanks to the presence of many antioxidant substances. A reduced maceration time also results in a low absorption of tannins from skins and pips, leaving a characteristic freshness and aromatic persistence in the mouth.

On the nose, Cerasuolo d’Abruzzo is characterized by a tempting note of red fruit, in particular, black cherry, which clearly identifies grape variety. The sip is rich, with a great freshness, a marked sapidity and a good balance between softness and the taste of the alcohol.

This wine is perfect to accompany grilled or casserole fish dishes, but also with cold cuts, grilled white meats, and medium-aged cheeses. Rieccolo Cerasuolo premium will give you the opportunity to taste this flavor of Italy and Abruzzo
