How to select the perfect wine glass?

Wine Glass

Each wine should be served in a special type of glass, we will now speak in particular of the classification of different wine glasses, the importance of which is considerable, but not fundamental, especially for amateur wine enthusiasts. However, a good glass should allow you to better appreciate the characteristics of the wine, such as:

  • Color
  • Aroma
  • Flavor

Let’s start with some simple rules:

1 – Crystal glass, never use colored or even plastic glasses, tasting begins with the eyes, it is necessary to enhance the reflections of the wine and grasp all of its nuances.

2 – The glasses must have stems, so as to avoid contact between your hands and the glass, and to preserve the temperature of the wine.

3 – Serve with elegance: never fill a glass more than one third of its capacity.

As the shape changes, the bouquets, gustatory and retronasal sensations change. This is why the choice of glass becomes an important part of the tasting.

The type of glass varies according to the type of wine: red, white, sparkling etc. It is equally important to distinguish between young wines and those more complex, such as simple reds,  vintage reds and so on.

General Rules

1 – The large and rounded goblets with an enlarged shape concentrate the wine towards the back of mouth, preventing the tannins from attacking the gums. They favor the swirling movement of the glass to oxygenate the wine and allow for a better grasp of the bouquet of red wines.

2 – A large glass can be used for young red wines, and as you move towards rosé and white wines, as it narrows slightly upwards, it allows for a better concentration of aromas in white wines. This shape directs the wine towards the tip and sides of the tongue, with which sweetness and acidity are perceived respectively.

3 – The flûte is suitable for dry sparkling wines: This type of glass, despite the undeniable appeal that allows you to appreciate the perlage development, does not allow the aroma and richness of the wine to be fully expressed, even still, such glasses are used more and more often.

4 – The cup is the most suitable glass for tasting sweet sparkling wines: The nectar is evenly distributed in the mouth and allows the sweetness and aromas to express themselves at their best.

NB: If a wine is not good, it’s not the fault of the glass, it’s the wine!
