Wine Production in Italy 2021 (2020 Harvest)

Wine Production in Italy By Type (%)

According to ISTAT data, wine production in Italy in 2020 was stable overall compared to 2019 at 49.9 mln hl and 9% above the decade average (45.6). The rise of white wines is of particular note, with growth over the last 15 years from 47% to 57% of Italian wine production. This growth can be connected with the increase in wine consumption by women and the aperitif "phenomenon".

Wine Production in Italy By Category (%)

It is worth noting the decline in IGT wines, which fell in the past few years from 33% to 23% of total production replaced in part by DOC / DOCG wines, and by table wines which have lower requirements and controls.

Wine Production By Region

Even if the harvest in the north is better than in the south compared to 2019, examining historical averages, we can interpret the numbers differently. In fact, southern Italy's production of 19.8 million hectoliters was actually 12 percent higher than the 2010-19 average, although down 7 percent year-on-year. In the north, the 24.4 million hectoliters produced in 2019 is + 7% higher than in 2019 and 9% above average. As a result, central Italy's production is on par with both the historical average and 2019’s average. While many small regions show strong volatility, Abruzzo confirms stable production in line with the decade average.
